What a throwback. This is probably one of the best, most iconic songs ever written. So yes, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the Song of the Week. To start off, this song was actually an attempt to “write the ultimate pop song” on Cobain’s part. He used the Pixie’s “soft-loud” method, and named the song after a brand of girl’s deodorant. To expand that thought, it originated from Cobain’s night with Kathleen Hanna, after she wrote “Kurt smells like Teen Spirit” on his wall. Hanna was implying that Cobain was laced with the smell of his ex Tobi Vail, who wore Teen Spirit deodorant. However, Kurt Cobain had no idea what Teen Spirit was, and had assumed she was referring to his rebellious aura. And so the title was born. Anyway, this track was the first real “alternative rock” song to ever be a hit, and ignited grunge as a way of life. That means flannel, loud guitars, and lyrics filled to the brim with angst had finally found a place. Furthermore, flyers for the music video were passed out to potential extras, saying, "Nirvana needs you to appear in their upcoming music video. You should be 18-25 year old and adopt a high school persona, i.e. preppy, punk, nerd, jock. Be prepared to stay for several hours. Come support Nirvana and have a great time." The shoot took 12 hours, and director Samuel Bayer recalls, "Nobody wanted to be there for more than a half hour, and I needed them for 12 hours. By the 11th hour when the band had had it with me and the kids were so angry with me, they said, 'Can we destroy the set?'" So, Bayer had the extras destroy the set, giving the perfect angst-filled finale. All in all, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana is sure to bring back memories of the birth of grunge.
